Why are documents notarized?

Notarization serves three purposes: To ensure the person signing a document is properly identified. To ensure the intended person signs the document under their own free will. And, to ensure the transaction can be independently verified after the fact.

A commissioned notary public helps protect against identity theft by validating and verifying important documents and signatures. A huge part of my job is to authenticate a person’s identity. A notary is one important step in protecting against identity theft and fraud.
